Marking International Day of the Girl Child 2016, UNICEF and UNFPA lead call from over 50 UN agencies, NGOs and academics, urging action to end child marriage and teenage pregnancy for all girls in Sri Lanka.

Colombo, 12 October 2016: To mark International Day of the Girl Child 2016, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) presented a unique joint letter, signed by over 50 UN agencies, non-governmental organizations, leading medical practitioners, academics and partners, highlighting the issues of child marriage and teenage pregnancy in Sri Lanka, and calling on the government to continue its actions to address this vital issue. The letter also offers the full support of all named signatories.


UNICEF provided support SL flood emergency to the Ministry of Health with supplies of 500,000 water purification tablets to ensure safe drinking water and 12.5 tons of chlorine to disinfect contaminated wells and homes. The supplies are currently distributed in the affected areas. In addition, UNICEF is working closely with the National Water Supply and Drainage Board to procure 800 water tanks (1,000 litres) and 20 pumps, which will be distributed in the next few days based on the needs of the affected districts.


High Level Roundtable Meeting on Implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG's) Relating to Violence against Children in South Asia

Colombo, 14 March 2016 – High-level representatives from eight countries in South Asia are meeting in Sri Lanka from 14 to 15 March to renew and strengthen their commitment to end violence against children in the region. In light of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development adopted by world leaders in September 2015, the meeting will be the first step towards building a common understanding and regional strategy to reach the Sustainable Development Goals and
Targets related to violence against children.
