Real Madrid and Spanish National Team star football player Sergio Ramos was appointed UNICEF Spain’s newest ambassador on 10 June during an event with youth in Curitiba, Brazil.

Sport gives us heroes and heroines to look up to and positive role models who inspire young people to overcome odds and aim high for success. At UNICEF, our program of Goodwill Ambassadors is a way to harness the fame and celebrity of talented people around the world to help improve the lives of children.

UNICEF’s celebrities have a wide range of talents and achievements, but they all share a commitment to help children. And in each case a celebrity’s association with UNICEF comes about because he or she has already demonstrated that commitment.

Celebrities attract attention – nowhere more than in the world of sport – and they can use their fame to focus the world on the needs of children, both in their own countries and by visiting field projects and emergency situations abroad. Celebrities can directly address those with the power to effect change. Celebrities can use their talents and fame to fundraise and advocate for children and support UNICEF’s mission to ensure every child’s right to health, education, equality and protection.

At the global and national level, UNICEF counts many former Olympians, world champions, athletes and other sports personalities among its Ambassadors. Read on to explore a list of the many sports-related ambassadors who partner with UNICEF for children.
