Planting Trees as an Act of Peace
A symbol of hope and unity
The idea of tree planting as a symbol of peace dates to ancient times; a way of creating a legacy that is never forgotten and would benefit future generations. All religions unquestionably do believe that nature is a divine act, in Christianity, the planting of trees is a good deed that brings blessings and joy to the world, while in other societies, planting trees is considered a form of charity that benefits both humans and animals.
The practice of planting trees as a symbol of peace was popularized by Wangari Maathai, a Kenyan environmentalist. In 1977, she founded the Green Belt Movement, an organization that encouraged women to plant trees in their communities to improve their lives and the
environment. Maathai believed that planting trees was a way of empowering women and girls, promoting peace, and fostering a democratic space for better lives.
As the world celebrates the International Day of Peace, I couldn't help but think of the various ways in which we can contribute to promoting peace in our own small ways. It's easy to feel powerless in the face of the many conflicts in South Sudan, but even the smallest actions can make a difference.
One inspiring example is the work of UNICEF's young reporters in promoting peace by planting trees in Juba One primary school. These young people have recognized environmental degradation's role in perpetuating conflict and have taken it upon themselves to do something about it.
By planting trees in South Sudan, a nation affected by conflict, the young reporters are helping restore the natural environment and creating a sense of unity and hope for the future. Trees symbolize growth and renewal, and their presence can help foster a sense of community and shared purpose.
As we reflect on the importance of peace on this day, let us be inspired by the example of UNICEF’s young reporters and think about how we can each contribute to a more peaceful and just nation. Whether it's through planting trees, volunteering in our communities, or simply being kind to those around us, we all have the power to make a difference.
The tree-planting activity to commemorate International Peace Day in South Sudan was a reminder that peace is not only about the absence of war but also about creating a peaceful coexistence between humans and the environment. A powerful symbol of hope for the future of South Sudan, and a reminder that every individual has a role to play in creating a peaceful and sustainable society.
