Conversations in the Marley home, in finding ways to celebrate what would have been Bob Marley’s 75th birthday, and help children affected by COVID-19, resulted in the brainwave reimagining Bob Marley’s 1977 iconic song, ‘One Love.’ The next step was ‘Let’s get together with UNICEF’ and reimagine not only the song but the futures of vulnerable children. That is the power of music, and UNICEF South Africa is proud to be a partner of this One Love | Reimagine campaign.

The song, with its global theme of solidarity and unity, was an obvious choice and one that resonated with UNICEF’s mission. The Marley family - in collaboration with Tuff Gong International and Amplified records - quickly set about working with artists around the world to reimagine the new version. Featuring vocals from Bob Marley’s daughter Cedella, son Stephen, and grandson Skip, all proceeds will help children and their communities which have been devastated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

It is all about one planet, one humanity, one love.

Cedella articulates the significance of reimagining ‘One Love’ and getting together with UNICEF: ‘Over 40 years ago, my father wrote ‘One Love’ about unity, peace and universal love during a time when there was much trouble in the world...his message remains true today, we can get through this global crisis if we come together through one love and one heart.’  And just like that, the campaign: One Love | Reimagine was born, and UNICEF South Africa gets to be part of that locally.

The video features musicians from conflict zones and children living in vulnerable communities across the world. The overall message of the song is simple and clear, and rings true in these troubled times: ONE LOVE | ONE HEART  = knowledge + wisdom + understanding + freedom + justice + equality +food + clothing + shelter + peace + love + happiness. It is a call to reimagine the future of society by holding onto these basic rights and tenets of humanity.

Unicef South Africa has been involved - on the ground - in local campaigns to prevent the COVID-19 pandemic from becoming a lasting crisis for children. The One Love | Reimagine campaign is just another step in this fight. All proceeds and funds raised from the song and campaign will help support social systems and go towards providing basic food and hygiene essentials - soap, masks, gloves, hygiene kits, protective equipment and life-saving information - to families who need it most in under-resourced communities and informal settlements.

As a humanitarian organization, UNICEF South Africa’s mission - for every child - resonates with the Marley family’s project and vision of protecting children, and making the world a more just and equal place by reimagining their futures.

You too, can be part of this ONE LOVE appeal and help to reimagine children’s futures and honour the legacy of Bob Marley summarised in his iconic song.

‘Today, in the midst of a global pandemic, responding to Bob Marley’s call to “hear the children crying one love” is more important and relevant than ever. Only together can we defeat COVID-19 and reimagine a more equal, less discriminatory world for children.’
