This month in South Africa and around the world, we celebrate the life and legacy of former President Nelson Mandela.

We do so following the devastating impact of COVID-19 on lives and livelihoods across South Africa.

We do so following the horrific flooding that hit KwaZulu-Natal this year, as the province was still recovering from the 2021 unrest.

Children in South Africa are reeling from the loss of loved ones, from disrupted education and healthcare, from exposure to violence and struggles with mental health, while climate and environmental degradation threaten their futures.

But children have hopes and dreams for a life of opportunity, one where they can realize their rights – UNICEF is doing what we can to help children do just that.

Children are the most important asset in a country. For them to become that asset, they must receive education and love from their parents.

Nelson Mandela

Everyone has the opportunity to heed the call to action for people to recognize their individual power to make an imprint and change the world!

Nelson Mandela is known in South Africa as the “Father of the Nation” not only for his role in liberating his country but also for the love and support he has shown to its children.

UNICEF promotes the rights and wellbeing of every child, in everything we do. Together with our partners, we translate that commitment into practical action, focusing on reaching the most vulnerable and excluded children everywhere while working to create a safer and healthier environment for every child.
