UNICEF joins The Smurfs for the International Day of Happiness

Johannesburg, 23 March 2017 - For thousands of children in impoverished communities throughout South Africa, going to a cinema to watch a movie is a luxury that very few families can afford.

With this stark reality in mind, UNICEF and the UN Information Centre (UNIC) partnered with Sony Music and Ster Kinekor cinemas to invite 100 children (aged between 9 and 10 years old) to the premiere of the new Smurfs movie titled “The Lost Village.”

The children, from Kokosi Primary School west of Johannesburg were treated to a morning of fun but also of education as UNICEF and UNIC speakers engaged them about the International Day of Happiness, commemorated globally on the 20th of March and on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The “Small Smurfs Big Goals” campaign is designed to encourage young people everywhere to learn about and support the 17 SDGs adopted by world leaders in 2015 to help make the world more peaceful, equitable and healthy.

The campaign culminated on the International Day of Happiness which emphasizes the importance of personal happiness and well-being. The idea is closely linked to the SDGs, which include decent work for all, access to nutritious food, quality education and health services, and freedom from discrimination.
