Gauteng, 25 to 27 June 2015 - In preparation for the 2015 South African schools Choral Eisteddfod (SASCE) National Championships, UNICEF organised a learning camp for 95 learners and educators from farm schools in rural communities throughout the country. Working with the Department of Basic Education, the weekend provided an opportunity for children, many from under-resourced communities, to participate in a weekend of learning activities that was funded by the organisation, International Bank Vaults.

The weekend was officially opened with a formal dinner, where dining and social etiquette was explained. The following day was filled with creative learning exercises as well as sporting activities in order to foster harmony among the children who came from all 9 provinces of the country. By all accounts, the feedback from the participants was positive and affirming as key life skills were imparted including tolerance, empathy and teamwork.

In her address to the SASCE opening ceremony, the Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga noted that: “this year’s SASCE is special as it sees the reintegration of the farm school training programme, which includes a mentorship programme”.

The performance by the camp participants was well-received by the audience at the Eisteddford including President Jacob Zuma.
