For 67 minutes of Mandela Day, we as the UNICEF North West University Vaal Campus Club had the opportunity to visit the Kotulong Community Centre in Meyerton, south of Johannesburg.
Upon arrival, we were greeted with warm smiles and open arms as the staff took us on a tour around the centre.
The children were eager to show us their talents and share their stories and we spent the morning playing games, singing songs, dancing and learning about their daily lives. It was amazing to see the resilience and joy in their eyes despite the challenges they face.
The staff at Kotulong Community Centre are true heroes, providing a safe haven and support system for these children. We were humbled by their dedication and passion. It takes a village, and they make it work.
As we reflected on our experience, we realized that Mandela Day is not just about giving back for 67 minutes, but about making a lasting impact. Our visit to Kotulong reminded us that every child deserves love, care, and protection.
Creating a better world for every child, a core mission of UNICEF and seeing more people doing the same, renewed our sense of purpose.
The power of compassion, kindness, and community remains important and it starts with children.
Thank you to the Kotulong Community Centre for an unforgettable experience!
Spending time with these wonderful children and witnessing the love and care they receive was truly inspiring. It was a day filled with laughter and heartfelt connections that we will cherish forever.
