Documenting a polio vaccination campaign in Dhusamareeb district, central Somalia

Dhusamareeb, 27 April 2024: In Dhusamareeb district, central Somalia, a team of dedicated social mobilizers and vaccinators embarks on a mission to protect the youngest members of the community from the threat of the polio virus. Armed with vials of life-saving vaccines and unwavering determination, they set out to reach every child in this vast and expansive district of 150,000 people.

As they navigate through the narrow alleyways and crowded camps for the internally displaced, they are welcomed by families with open arms, thanks to years of groundwork that has convinced them to appreciate the importance of immunization to their children's health. But a few families are hesitant, their skepticism rooted in misinformation and fear.

The social mobilizers patiently explain the benefits of the polio vaccine and address any concerns with empathy and understanding. They know that building trust is essential to overcoming fears and ensuring that every child receives the protection they need.

The vaccinators travel door-to-door, offering free vaccinations to all children under the age of five. Among the children is Ayan, whose mother, Halima, was hesitant in the beginning, unsure of the safety of the vaccine. However, after speaking with the vaccinators and learning about the risks of polio, she decided to have Ayan vaccinated.

With gentle hands and reassuring smiles, the vaccinators administer the vaccine to Ayan. Halima watches with gratitude and relief, knowing that she has taken a crucial step in safeguarding her daughter's health and future.

Despite challenges such as limited resources and security risks, the social mobilizers remain undeterred in their mission. They work tirelessly, moving door-to-door and collaborating with local community leaders to reach even the most remote villages. Their efforts are bearing fruit as more children are turning up to receive the vaccine. With each dose administered, the threat of polio is diminishing and the hopes of a polio-free Somalia getting closer to being realized.

The vaccination in Dhusamareeb is part of a nationwide campaign aiming to vaccinate 2.7 million children in Somalia. The Ministry of Health is leading the campaign, supported by partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative that include UNICEF, WHO, the global vaccine alliance GAVI, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
