Launch of Global Partnership for Education grant for Puntland

Garowe, Puntland, 23 October 2017 - A high level ceremony to launch the US$5.6 million grant for education in Puntland from the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) took place in Garowe attended by the Education Minister Professor Abshir Aw-Yusuf Isse, the Speaker of the Puntland Parliament Ahmed Ali Hashi, the Deputy Representative of UNICEF Somalia, Jesper Moller, Puntland MPs and school children. There are around 200,000 children in Puntland who are out of school and this grant which runs to 2020 will help thousands of children there to go to and stay in school and benefit from qualified teachers.

Somalia has been a Global Partnership for Education partner since 2012. The current GPE funding for all Somalia is almost US$33 million. UNICEF is the grant agent for Puntland, and the European Union is the coordinating agency for the GPE across Somalia.
