Highlights

Child marriage – marriage under the age of 18 – is a fundamental violation of a girl’s human rights.

It has devastating consequences, disempowering girls within their communities and in their own homes, harming their health and psychological wellbeing, excluding them from education, and denying them the opportunity to fulfil their potential.

The persistence of harmful traditional child marriage practices not only hold back girls and women, but the communities in which they live and is a key factor in many places perpetuating poverty
