UNICEF and Prva TV Telethon raises 6.5 million dinars for children with disabilities
Belgrade, 18 December 2017 - More than 6,000 citizens and around 150 celebrities participated in the Telethon organised by UNICEF and Prva TV, thus raising funds for the inclusion of children with disabilities through UNICEF’s programme - Sport for All.
During the two-hour humanitarian and interactive television programme, 5,199 telephone calls were made, and 1,579 new regular monthly pledge donors became members of the Friends of UNICEF Club.
Predrag Danilovic, Dejan Tomasevic, Mirjana Karanovic, Tijana Bogdanovic, Filip Krajinovic, Marko Keselj, Dusan Borkovic, Ivica Kralj, Natasa Kovacevic, Danica Maksimovic, Voja Brajovic, Zeljko Samardzic, Brankica Sebastijanovic, Sara Jovanovic, Marija Zezelj, Paralympian medal winners, and other celebrities talked to viewers and contributed to the creation of better opportunities for children with disabilities.
The funds raised during the Telethon will help municipalities with day-care facilities for children with disabilities, through the procurement of sports and recreational equipment and the improvement of professional capacities of employees working with children with disabilities.
Between 25% and 47% of children with disabilities have experienced violence.
Sport inclusive events and recreational activities for children with disabilities will be organised to help them show their abilities and skills, and to help them build friendships with other children and to become equal members of society.
UNICEF's latest data show that in Serbia:
• 45% of parents of children with disabilities state that they or their children have experienced some kind of insult, humiliation or harassment due to their child's disability;
• In 24% of families, one of the parents had to give up work to care for their child;
• Between 25% and 47% of children with disabilities have experienced violence;
• 16% of citizens and 18% of pupils think that discrimination against some groups is acceptable.
Telenor and Telenor Bank have provided direct donations worth one million dinars each to support UNICEF’s Sport for All programme.
The VodaVoda company has provided support to the Early Childhood Development programme with a donation worth 2,750,000 dinars.
Technical support for the Telethon was provided by Algotech, Telekom Srbija, Telenor, VIP Mobile, SBB, ITH Media and Orion Telecom.
