Belgrade, 23-24 May - The first training for selected family assistants from 12 local self-government units (Apatin, Bač, Valjevo, Kula, Loznica, Obrenovac, Odžaci, Prijepolje, Ruma, Sremska Mitrovica, Ub, and Šid) was held. These assistants will provide support to the families of informal waste collectors over the next 18 months. The support for families is part of a broader initiative in the context of modernizing the waste management system, which will lead to the closure of 15 municipal landfills and the development of 6 regional waste management centres, causing many informal waste collectors to face the loss of their livelihoods.

The aim of the support is to enable them to earn income and gain better access to public services relevant to social inclusion (healthcare, education, and social protection) through the engagement of a family assistant as a key contact person in connecting with support providers, advocating, and assisting in the realization of certain rights, services, and measures according to identified needs. Family assistants in the selected municipalities will monitor and support the implementation of the Individual Family Support Plan through informing, directing, and motivating families for future changes.

In addition to training family assistants to improve the quality of support provided to families and assisting in the implementation of support plans for 75 families from the priority target group, the programme will support all 42 local self-government units covered by the new regional centres in establishing systemic policies, structures, and processes to address the rights and needs of informal waste collectors.

The trainings are being implemented by UNICEF and the Centre for Social Policy, with the support of UNOPS and UNFPA, within the programme "PRO - Local Governance for People and Nature," jointly conducted by the United Nations agencies in Serbia – UNOPS, UNICEF, UNFPA, and UNEP, in cooperation with the Government of the Republic of Serbia and with the financial support of the Government of Switzerland.
