Belgrade, 18 December 2008 – With a mutual understanding and consensus that physical activities are essential for the physical, mental, psychological and social development of children and adolescents, the Basketball Club “Crvena Zvezda” (Red Star) and UNICEF in Serbia signed an agreement of cooperation on the promotion of sport for development among school children.

The cooperation is primarily linked to the UNICEF-supported programme “School without Violence” where joint principles of  building the culture of non-violence, healthy life-styles, team work and fair play will be promoted, thus helping the fulfilment of  children’s right to sport,  recreation and play.

The “Red Star” sportsmen will provide expert support to the teachers of physical education in the schools involved in the “School without Violence” programme in order to improve the coaching skills and practices in the work with children. The Basketball Club will also help UNICEF organise annual Fair Play tournaments for school children and include children in a variety of sport events. The “Red Star” athletes will be engaged in the promotion of healthy life styles and non-violent communication.
