Speech by the UNICEF Representative at launch of the WaSH project in Nyabihu

February 25, 2010

Representative of the Ministry of Infrastructure
Governor of Western Province
Mayor of Nyabihu
Representative of the Netherlands Embassy in Rwanda,
All Protocol observed
Distinguished Guests
Ladies and Gentlemen:

It is a great pleasure for me to join you on behalf of the UN Family in Rwanda at this important launch event.

This is the last in a series of four important district level launches of an initiative that will provide over half a million people in four districts of Rwanda with access to safe water and sanitation by 2013.

This is especially important in a country where 80% of all diseases that affect the population are waterborne and diarrheal is one of the leading killers of children.

Ladies and Gentlemen, access to clean water and sanitation is a key human right and an explicit objective in Rwanda’s EDPRS. This is why I would like to congratulate the Government of Rwanda and the Ministry of Infrastructure in particular for all they have done for making this project a reality.

I would also like to thank the Government of Netherlands for backing the project through a very generous donation of 17.5 million US dollars.

UNICEF, through the UN Family in Rwanda is committed to working with all four districts targeted in the project to accelerate progress towards both EDPRS, Vision 2020 and the Millennium Development Goals and ensure that all the communities, health centres and schools included in the project manifesto are model sites for the delivery of water and sanitation services and the acquisition of knowledge related to improved hygiene.

Distinguished guests and members of the Nyabihu community,

  • In this respect, I would like to congratulate you for your motivation and commitment in organising this launching ceremony and already taking significant steps to accelerate the project including:
  • Signing statements of engagement
  • Developing high quality detailed district work plans. and
  • Establishing District and Community WASH Teams
  • Committing resources and skilled people to ensure that the vision becomes a reality as soon as possible.

UNICEF will remain at your side, within our modest means, to ensure that you lead amongst the four districts in implementing this project with diligence, dedication and efficiency.
