Highlights

Bhutan is the only carbon negative country in the world. Despite the country’s longstanding commitment to tackling climate change and protecting its rich and diverse natural environment, it is highly vulnerable to the adverse impacts of climate change. Bhutan ranks 111 out of 163 countries in UNICEF’s children’s climate risk index of 2021.

The report, commissioned by UNICEF Regional Office for South Asia, examines the direct and indirect impacts of climate change on the education system; the education sector's response to climate change using seven key education systems components (i.e., policies, plans and strategies; finance; curriculum, teaching and learning; teacher capacity development; communication, coordination and partnership; school/community student participation platforms; monitoring, evaluation and accountability); and offers key recommendations to make the education system more resilient in the face of increasing climate change risks.
