Bucharest, November 22, 2022 - In the context of the World Children's Day - celebrated on Sunday, November 20, Denisa and Yusif, two children who are members of the Children's Board supported by UNICEF, addressed the Senate plenary on Monday, sharing the challenges they have children across the country, as well as their solutions.
On the same occasion of the World Children's Day, the Children-Senators Friendship Group was established, with the aim of prioritizing children's rights in national legislation. The group brings together senators from all political parties and will be a bridge between children and senators so that legislative proposals take into account children's views and needs.
"I am happy to announce the formation of the Children-Senators Friendship Group. Thus, we will be able to periodically consult with the children, we will find out directly from them what are the concerns, the challenges, but also the solutions they propose. Children are citizens with full rights and it is important that all legislative proposals aimed at them take into account their opinions", said Alina Gorghiu, Acting President of the Senate.
"This year we are celebrating again the World Children's Day, and this often makes us ask Why? Why is it important to get involved?". A simple question with a lot of answers, but with only one conclusion: We can change this country and shape the future of what we call home with our own power", declared Denisa.
"There is no children's world or adult's world. There is only one world, and children are part of it. On the occasion of World Children's Day, I want to remind you that we children have a voice and an opinion. It is also our world, and they must be listened to. Although all our rights are of equal importance, I consider the right to involvement in the decisions that affect us to be a fundamental one, with poor respect. But together we can change this!", said Yusif.
"Through the partnership with the Romanian Senate, we managed to give the children their say, to establish a constant dialogue between them and the decision-makers, to find out what are the priorities and solutions that they identify for respecting and promoting the rights of the child. By involving more children and young people in making decisions that concern them, we support the inclusion and well-being of all the vulnerable", said Anna Riatti, UNICEF Representative in Romania.
This year, on June 1, the Senate of Romania launched the online platform senatjunior.ro, a tool dedicated to the children, which explains in an accessible language what the Senate is, how it works, what the laws are and how they are created, as well as much other information about the legislative process. It is the first website of an institution in Romania dedicated to children. It has also become a tradition for the Senate to open its doors each year to children and parents.
