The President of Romania visited the school in Motoșeni, part of the UNICEF Quality Inclusive Education package

BUCHAREST – 17 June 2016. On Friday, 17 June 2016, the President of Romania, Mr. Klaus Iohannis, visited “Gheorghe Nechita” Gymnasium School in Motoșeni, which is part of the UNICEF Quality Inclusive Education package. This visit underlines the importance of education as a national priority, providing an opportunity for identifying concrete solutions to increasing school participation among vulnerable children and improving quality of education for all children.    

Thanks to its teaching staff, the Gymnasium School in Motoșeni is a remarkable example.  As a result of their dedication, an increasing number of children have enrolled and stayed in school, receiving the support they need to develop their individual potential and become accomplished active citizens. Together with the UNICEF team, the school implements the project on “Social inclusion through the provision of integrated services at community level”, an intervention which has proven its efficacy by way of the cooperation between authorities that can help children stay in school and parents who understand the importance of school education. The model is one worth scaling up at the national level. Ensuring quality education, regardless of one’s background, is key to reducing school dropout. Throughout the process, schools and their teaching staff play a decisive role. School should provide students with a safe and motivating environment, an educational journey that they should be willing to take, to participate in with joy, not fear, where student-teacher respect and appreciation prevails”, said the President of Romania, Mr. Klaus Iohannis.

On the closing of the school year by 8th graders, the President of Romania handed students their graduation diplomas and wished them best of luck in high school.

By implementing the Quality Inclusive Education (QIE) package, UNICEF and its partners focus on preventing non-enrolment, absenteeism, dropout and early school leaving, as well as on increasing learning outcomes and competencies. Concretely, the QIE package interventions include: strengthening the capacity of the school management and teachers to support each and every child, according to their needs; improving teaching methods, tools and skills; partnering with student’ families and increasing parental skills; mobilising communities to support education; enhancing the non-cognitive and motivation of children; encouraging diversity of students regardless of gender, ethnicity, religion, (dis)ability and socio-economic background.

By implementing this package we aim to ensure that every child enrols in school at an early age, learns to the maximum of his/her potential, and is prepared for life, for the labour market and for active citizenship. All this is achieved through the development of a school-family-community partnership for child participation and support. The educational package is universal, as all students and schools can benefit from its interventions, but it focuses on the most vulnerable children and most disadvantaged schools”, said Sandie Blanchet, UNICEF Representative in Romania.

Currently, UNICEF together with central, county and local authorities in Bacău County are in the process of testing the Quality Inclusive Education Package in 45 schools and educational units, including kindergartens, with funding from Norway Grants, UNICEF and the private sector. In all, 21,000 children in Bacău County stand to receive direct support under these interventions.  

The pilot project will be subject to an independent evaluation whose results will be shared with decision-makers with a view to develop new laws, norms and standards in the field, as well as to mobilize state and European funding for a national scale up of the model, for the four million children of Romania.
