Breastfeeding Week 2010 – 10 Baby Steps or 10 Steps for Baby?

Children do not have die from preventable causes. Still, they do in Romania as elsewhere. Research has shown that infant mortality can be reduced by 20% if children are put to their mothers’ breast in the first hour after birth. This is not something to overlook in a country with one of the highest infant mortality rates in Europe.

International data show that exclusive breastfeeding at 6 months amounts to 37%; but only 16 % of  Romanian women exclusively breastfeed.

At the global level, 25% of maternities are Baby Friendly Hospitals. In Romania 23 maternities out of 204 are fulfilling the standards. But, there is something here. In these 23 maternities 30% of Romania’s new citizens are born.

Another 17 maternities are struggling to be awarded with the title Baby Friendly Hospital. Some are more advanced, others are still at the beginning. They are taking baby steps for infant’s health.

The message of this year’s Breastfeeding Week is that the 10 Steps will have to become the standard practice in all facilities big or small, from county hospitals and town maternities to capital cities, and available for all women and children.

Let us take the first 10 baby steps – please join us in the effort of making all maternities in Romania Baby Friendly Hospitals!
