Marcos Díaz - Just One Step Away

Marcos Díaz completes the first three phases of Swim Across the Continents

SANTO DOMINGO.- Dominican ultra-distance swimming champion Marcos Díaz expressed optimism after completing the first three phases of the Swim Across the Continents crossing project, with the support of the United Nations Organisation.

“We are very happy because we’ve had good results in terms of sports, but the main thing is that we’ve reached the people and raised awareness about the Millennium Development Goals”, said Díaz upon his arrival in the country on Tuesday at Las Américas - Dr. José Francisco Peña Gómez International Airport.

Díaz recently completed the third phase of the Swim Across the Continents project, linking Africa with Europe by crossing the Strait of Gibraltar. Before that he had linked Oceania with Asia and Asia with Africa.

“We’re very grateful to the Dominican people and to our sponsors who have made this event possible”, he stated.

The fourth phase of the swim will be from Europe to America, across the Bering Strait, which is considered the most ambitious challenge in the entire project. “We’ve been training hard and are aware of the challenge, but what that means is that it is enough to keep going and making the effort”, added Díaz.

Trainer Augusto García recently highlighted the good rhythm that he has maintained over this three-month process, which will culminate in September when Díaz swims in New York City and presents a book that compiles thousands of people’s signatures at the United Nations meeting on the Millennium Development Goals.
