Special Initiatives for Adolescents

Adolescents and HIV/AIDS With 7,000 people between the ages of 15-24 becoming newly infected with HIV every day, AIDS must be an important consideration for any programmes that focus on adolescents. Recognizing that HIV/AIDS is more than just a health problem, UNICEF is working with governments, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and the UNAIDS co-sponsors to mobilise young people around this issue, to provide them with information and life skills, as well as access to services, including voluntary and confidential counselling and testing (VCCT), to help create a safe and supportive environment, and to provide support for adolescents affected by and living with HIV/AIDS. UNICEF participated in the 11th International Conference on AIDS and STDs in Africa (ICASA), held in Lusaka, Zambia from 12-16 September, 1999.
