About Ralph H. Henderson, M.D.

Dr. Ralph H. Henderson is Assistant Director-General of the World Health Organization. As Director of the Expanded Programme on Immunization at WHO from 1979 to 1989, he was the architect of the global effort that raised immunization rates from 5 per cent around 1980 to 80 per cent in 1990. In a public health career spanning more than 30 years, much of it with the US Public Health Service, Dr. Henderson previously made major contributions to smallpox eradication and the control of venereal diseases.
