The future of the child: foresight for action

What is foresight?

Foresight is the process of anticipating change. Widely used by governments and the private sector for strategic planning, it can also make international development strategies and policies more robust and forward-looking. Foresight methodologies, practices and processes help international organizations such as UNICEF navigate uncertainty and better prepare for the future.

Foresight does not predict the future or provide an exact road map of what will happen to children. Rather, it identifies emerging trends and the changing circumstances that could impact their future. Foresight allows UNICEF to look beyond what is probable and prepare for what is possible.

By conceptualizing many future possibilities and understanding the implications for child rights and well-being, UNICEF can develop more realistic and resilient policies that improve outcomes. Using foresight, UNICEF is better positioned to make progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals for the benefit of every child.
