Mali, 2019 – Fatoumata* and Aichata*, both 12, hold hands at a new displacement site supported by UNICEF in Sevare. The girls fled together when their village, Oundou, was attacked – an ambush in which 135 people were killed. A United Nations report has found that 2018 was the worst year on record for children caught up in armed conflict. More than 12,000 were killed or maimed – the highest numbers since the UN started recording. (*names changed)
