Shakira Activity Highlights

2017 • January • Goodwill Ambassador and music star Shakira urged world and business leaders at the opening ceremony of the World Economic Forum, on 16 January in Davos, Switzerland, to support efforts to feed, educate and care for underprivileged children.  "Today's babies will drive tomorrow's business. Their capacity to contribute will shape tomorrow's societies, will solve tomorrow's problems," she said in an impassioned speech, demonstrating her devotion to early childhood development.

2016 • March • Goodwill Ambassador Shakira joins a team of industry experts as judge of the 2016 Lions Health Festival and Awards competition to be held in Cannes, France in June 2016. The competition challenges young creatives and marketers to develop an integrated marketing toolkit that will raise awareness among caregivers about the importance of play in fostering children’s cognitive, social and emotional development in the critical first years of life. 2015 • September • Goodwill Ambassador Shakira celebrated the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals with a powerful performance before an audience at the United Nations General Assembly that included over 130 heads of state and government. (Press Release)

2015 • January • Celebrating the arrival of their second child, singer-songwriter and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Shakira, and FC Barcelona soccer star Gerard Piqué expanded upon their original concept of a ‘World Baby Shower’ to benefit UNICEF and vulnerable children around the world. 2013 • January • Goodwill Ambassador Shakira and FC Barcelona star Gerard Piqué invited friends and fans to join their online baby shower – in support of the world’s most vulnerable babies. 2012 • October • In Azerbeijan, Shakira met with teenage footballers from a UNICEF-supported national girls’ football league. She encouraged the athletes to inspire their peers to grasp their future, including through continuing to seek an education. (Newsline)      

2011 • November • Goodwill Ambassador Shakira met with a group of adolescent girls from impoverished parts of India to discuss the importance of educating and empowering girls to break the cycle of poverty and inequality. (Newsline)

2011 • June • Goodwill Ambassador and global education advocate Shakira visited the Max Rayne ‘Hand-in-Hand’ School for Bilingual Education in Jerusalem, meeting with students to talk about the power of education. (Newsline)

2009 September In Germany, Shakira was given the Honorary Award for Children’s Rights by UNICEF Germany.  Shakira received this award for her commitment to mobilizing children and adolescents to create a better future for themselves and others.  The award ceremony took place at the BURDA LIVE event, which is a forum of Burda Medien GmbH for discussions and performances of national and international celebrities.  (Newsline) 

2007 • December • In Bangladesh, Shakira raised awareness of the impact of the cyclone Sidr on the local communities. She met with women and children and also visited UNICEF-supported education projects.  (Newsline)

2006 • November • In El Salvador, at San Salvador’s Sports Palace, Shakira addressed thousands of Salvadoran students who took part in a march against violence. More than 8,000 children and adolescents marched in the streets of El Salvador’s capital city as part of a UNICEF campaign to protect children from violence.  (Newsline)
