On 14 February 2014 in Tanauan, Philippines, UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador David Beckham prepares to administer a dose of oral polio vaccine to an infant at a UNICEF-supported health centre.

LONDON,  21  February2014 - UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador David Beckham has filmed a personal appeal urging people to support children caught up in emergencies across the globe.

Around the world there are millions of children who have lost their families, homes, schools and more due to extreme weather or conflict. Countless children are suffering, in grave danger of violence, exploitation, disease and neglect.

Right now more then 1.2 million Syrian children are refugees due to the ongoing crisis and 2.3 million children are affected by the conflict in the Central African Republic.

In the Philippines, where Beckham saw UNICEF’s vital emergency work for himself last week, 1.7 million children were displaced as a result of Typhoon Hayian.

In the film Beckham says: “Emergencies like war, a food crisis or a natural disaster like the typhoon here in the Philippines destroy children's lives. It's easy to be overwhelmed by the scale of an emergency.”

“Seeing how UNICEF and its partners are helping to put lives back together makes me hugely proud. But to continue to save children’s lives, keep them safe from harm and help them rebuild their futures, we need you.”

Across the globe, UNICEF is working round the clock to get aid to children in emergencies. Whenever disaster strikes, UNICEF is there.

Today, UNICEF is launching its Humanitarian Appeal for Children for 2014 – the largest in its history. UNICEF is appealing for £1.3 billion to help reach 59 million children living in crises around the world during 2014.
