SUVA, 30 June 2015 – UNICEF Pacific has warmly welcomed the appointment of its newest ambassadors, the Vanuatu Women’s Beach Volleyball team.

In making the announcement, UNICEF Pacific Deputy Representative, Ms. Isabelle Austin, said, “It is a privilege to be in partnership with a sporting team that shows dedication, teamwork and passion for what they do, just as UNICEF does with children.”

“Their appointment comes at an exciting time – the start of preparations for the Rio 2016 Olympics and use of the ‘Team UNICEF’ initiative, which aims to use sport to promote tolerance, peace, respect, and to encourage cooperation and leadership among young people,” she said.

Ms Austin added that “The team are one of the Pacific region’s sporting success stories. Perhaps even more importantly, they are inspiring role models for all children particularly young girls in Vanuatu.”

Debbie Masauvakalo, President of Vanuatu Volleyball said “The team is thrilled to join ‘Team UNICEF’. UNICEF does incredible work for children in the Pacific and across the world. As the Vanuatu Women’s Beach Volleyball team moves from strength to strength in the global rankings we will be proud to wear UNICEF’s name and take their messages to the world.”

The Vanuatu Women’s Beach Volleyball Team has won many championships including the 2012 Oceania Championships and 9th at the 2013 World Championship. The Pacific Games Council awarded the Vanuatu women’s team the Pacific Team of the Year 2013 and 2014. For their impressive sporting achievements the President of Vanuatu awarded the team the ‘Batch of Distinction’ Award at the 33rd Independence Day Celebration.

They are currently the only Pacific team participating in the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) Beach Volleyball World Championships in the Netherlands which is an important event to qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

UNICEF Ambassadors support UNICEF’s efforts to raise awareness of the aims, objectives and priorities of UNICEF, to convey messages about its activities and to extend its public outreach. Ambassadors demonstrate an active commitment to promote the rights of children and to further UNICEF’s mission to Unite for Children.
