In 2007, the ratio of girls to boys in basic education was 98.3 per cent, meeting the goal of gender parity. The secondary school dropout rate among females was 2.9 per cent, compared with 2.6 per cent for males during the 2005/2006 school year.
Adolescent girls have few opportunities for development and participation and the median age at first marriage for women is 18 years.  While women have long played a pivotal role in socio-economic development, they are increasingly being relegated to the informal market. Participation in the labour market, at 15.2 per cent, is among the lowest in the world and unemployment among young women is 46 per cent. Around nine per cent of households are female-headed and many of them are among the most vulnerable.
