A young boy is immunized in the village of Jbara, in the northern West Bank. The tiny community of 300 is almost entirely surrounded by the Separation Barrier, and has virtually no health or education services.

As at 15 February, there were 1,612 reported cases of H1N1 with 45 deaths including 11 children. UNICEF support to the Ministry of Health's
prevention and awareness campaign has included:

• Sensitizing and training 4,000 health workers on standard case management and immunization;
• 10,000 doses of pediatric tamiflu;
• Awareness-raising campaigns targeting 1,200 schools, including soap and gel for proper handwashing; and
• 120,000 leaflets and 12,000 posters for distribution at community health centres.

The H1N1 prevention and awareness campaign has been made possible through funding by the Government of Japan.
