With the generous support of the Government of Japan, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and its partners are working with the Government of Mozambique to set up child malnutrition treatment centers to provide crucial and urgent support to malnourished children in the northern region of Mozambique. This initiative aims not only to treat cases of malnutrition, but also to educate and empower mothers to ensure continuity of treatment and care at home.

The Nutritional Rehabilitation Programme reduces severe acute malnutrition rates in children under 5. The focus on treatment, healthy eating, and education directly within communities like Lisma’s demonstrates a commitment to a robust and resilient childhood.

With the generous support of the Government of Japan, UNICEF is working with the Government of Mozambique to set up child malnutrition treatment centers to provide crucial and urgent support to malnourished children.

"When I saw my daughter Awa suffering from convulsions and complaining of abdominal pain, I panicked and ran to the hospital," says Fátima Nagib, a 25-year-old farmer. Doctors promptly saw Awa and she was admitted to the Nutrition Rehabilitation Programme’s Outpatient Treatment, where she received treatment for severe acute malnutrition. Today, Awa continues to be treated at the PRN TDA center receiving the care and attention she needs to recover. The story of Fátima and Awa highlights the vital importance of community-based child malnutrition treatment and prevention programs. It shows how continuous support for these interventions can have a transformative impact on the lives of the most vulnerable families.

“These sessions in the community help us a lot; we suffered a lot before,” Lisma Sadique, a 39-year-old woman and devoted mother of 6 children, including Soninha Gabriel, an adorable 6-month-old baby. Lisma now finds support and guidance in the sessions of the Nutritional Rehabilitation Program in her community, located in Patone, in the province of Nampula. The sessions offer Lisma a variety of essential skills. They include careful weighing of little Soninha, nutritious cooking classes, as well as instruc

With the support of the Government of Japan and KfW, UNICEF, in partnership with HELPO, is supporting multipurpose health workers in implementing community health and nutrition activities, including the Integrated Package for Nutrition and Treatment of Malnutrition in the Community, in the district of Ancuabe, in the province of Cabo Delgado.
