UNICEF expresses deep concern about the situation of children in Southern Kyrgyzstan

BISHKEK, 13 June 2010 - UNICEF expresses deep concern about the situation of children in Southern Kyrgyzstan, the scene of unrest and fighting since Thursday. UNICEF has received distressing reports, including photographs, of children being displaced, traumatized, separated from family members, and even being killed. UNICEF urges all parties to take all necessary measures to protect children, who are always the most vulnerable in conflicts, and stresses that no children should be involved in conflict or participate in demonstrations.

UNICEF is on the ground in over 150 countries and territories to help children survive and thrive, from early childhood through adolescence. The world’s largest provider of vaccines for developing countries, UNICEF supports child health and nutrition, good water and sanitation, quality basic education for all boys and girls, and the protection of children from violence, exploitation, and AIDS.  UNICEF is funded entirely by the voluntary contributions of individuals, businesses, foundations and governments.
