BAKU, April 29, 2010 – The European Union and UNICEF, in collaboration with the Government of Azerbaijan, have joined together in an effort to create better policies and actions contributing to improving the lives of children and young people in the country. “

As Azerbaijan increasingly integrates into the European family, it makes use of the existing legal instruments as well as accumulated expertise and experience, in designing its own policies, in particular those which have an impact on children’s rights,” said Ambassador Roland Kobia, Head of the EU Delegation to Azerbaijan.

UNICEF Representative Mark Hereward added that “Today we in UNICEF are joining hands with the EU and the Government of Azerbaijan to reach our common objectives: Azerbaijan that is fit for children, built for children – and built with them.”

As a first contribution to this partnership, the EU and UNICEF are organizing a joint event on April 30, 2010 (at the Hyatt Conference and Meeting Centre) to review with partners from the Government and civil society progress in legislative reform and the state of existing policies regarding children and young people.

A number of key governmental officials and experts on child rights will take part at the event, including Hijran Huseynova, Head of the State Committee on Family, Women and Children Affairs, and Hadi Rajabli, Head of the Social Policy Committee at the Parliament. The event will be opened by Ambassador Roland Kobia, and Mark Hereward, UNICEF Representative and include a presentation of EU-funded projects: on early intervention and inclusion of children with special needs (by Stichting Global Initiative on Psychiatry Foundation); on foster care and family support services (by Hilfswerk, Austria); and on creating livelihoods for youth (by the Save the Children).
