PODGORICA, 2 June 2020 – After the successful #PlayAtHome campaign carried out during the coronavirus crisis, on the occasion of the reopening of kindergartens, the Ministry of Education of Montenegro and UNICEF are calling for the enrolment of every child in preschool institutions by using the opportunities provided by the internet. To that end, a series of video messages have been made in which educators present to the public the activities they are carrying out with preschool children, inviting them to enrol in kindergarten using the internet.

"We believe that, especially in this period when e-enrolment in kindergartens is underway, it is extremely important that parents understand the importance of preschool institutions and the fact that we are working with our youngest ones here." Educators are trained professionals who are doing their job with love and who know how to encourage children's development. In cooperation with pedagogues and psychologists, they are enabling children to grow up healthy in a stimulating environment," said Milica Lekic, spokesperson of the Ministry of Education.

UNICEF wants to use this action to remind Montenegro’s parents that preschool education is in the best interest of every child.

"Scientific research around the world shows that preschool education is crucial for the wellbeing of every child, as well as for the future education and lifelong development of children. That is why our message to all parents is – provide your child with the best possible start – enrol them in kindergarten so that they can develop through play, learn, and socialize with their peers! The possibility of enrolling via the internet makes this process even faster and easier," says the acting UNICEF Representative to Montenegro, Michaela Bauer.

From this year, enrolment of children can be done electronically using the website www.upisi.edu.me. This service has been prepared in cooperation with the UNDP office in Montenegro. Quality preschool education is of the utmost importance for the proper development of children because, in addition to the love, attention, play, and education that children receive in their home, they tend to develop faster in kindergarten through playing with their peers.

Since the moment kindergartens were closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ministry of Education, together with UNICEF and the Association Parents, has been organizing the #PlayAtHome campaign, which included posting videos of various games for parents and preschool children on social media, calling on parents to support their children's development through playing in their homes. Almost two-thirds of parents of children aged 4 to 17 years have heard of the #PlayAtHome campaign, and most of them find it useful and interesting. This campaign was also mentioned as one of the models of good practice of preschool education during the global COVID-19 pandemic in the UNICEF–Innocenti Global Report on the education responses to this crisis in 127 countries.
