CETINJE, 18 MARCH 2022 – To promote the importance of art education for every child in Montenegro, as a powerful tool for supporting children to develop the values and socio-emotional skills for non-violent conflict resolution, Montenegro’s Royal Capital Cetinje, with support from UNICEF and in cooperation with the Music Centre, all music schools across the country and the Bureau for Education, will host a summer concert of the Montenegrin Children’s Symphony Orchestra.
This was agreed at the recent meeting between Cetinje’s mayor Nikola Đurašković and UNICEF Montenegro Representative Juan Santander.
Mayor Nikola Đurašković thanked UNICEF for the support provided to the Old Royal Capital through education and numerous activities and said that he wishes for this successful cooperation to be continued and strengthened in the future.
“This partnership with UNICEF in Montenegro is of special significance for the Old Royal Capital, as UNICEF is initiating changes for the wellbeing of children and investing efforts to improve the situation of young people in Montenegro. We are absolutely open to all initiatives which UNICEF considers important and which can be realized in partnership with the Old Royal Capital".
During the meeting with Cetinje’s mayor, Santander reminded that teamwork, empathy and tolerance are just some of the skills which children develop through art education, and which help prevent and reduce peer violence.
For an orchestra to be successful, all its members must learn how to work together, resolve all misunderstandings and conflicts constructively, and support each other in order to achieve a common goal.
“It is well-known that art and culture encourage social and emotional development. For this reason, UNICEF is calling for every child in Montenegro to be provided with opportunities to engage in art and culture".
Mark Korović, who conducts the Montenegrin Symphony Orchestra, will conduct the Children’s Symphony Orchestra concert in Cetinje.
This will be the second Children’s Symphony Orchestra concert to be organized within the programme for the development of socio-emotional skills, My Values and Virtues, which was introduced into Montenegro’s education system in 2015 with support from UNICEF and the Bureau for Education.
So far, it has been expanded to more than 100 primary and secondary schools supporting more than 20,000 students to learn to recognize their own and other people’s emotions and solve problems constructively.
