Mongolia certified measles free
26th June 2014, Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia - Today in Mongolia we mark a great achievement -- the country's certification as measles free. This remarkable event is the result of a four-decade long commitment that saw sustained efforts to improve the health status of the entire Mongolian population, saving over one million lives over this period. In addition to being among the first countries to have eliminated measles in its region, Mongolia has also eliminated two other diseases -- polio in 2000 and smallpox in 1940. What makes this achievement even more remarkable is that Mongolia is the very first country that is not within the high income category in the Asia Pacific region to have eliminated measles. This is an inspiring success story, as it shows that middle and low income countries can make such progress to ensure the health of their population.
