Hammamet, Tunisia, March 12, 2015 – UNICEF Libya country office launches a seven-day workshop to train Libyan researchers and data collectors on Violence Against Children in schools and family settings. Following inception, the workshop is the second phase of a process UNICEF is undertaking to address the lack of comprehensive and disaggregated data on key child protection issues, including violence against children young people.

During the workshop, Libyan researchers and data collectors will be trained on methodology and tools of the survey and will receive guidance and support on facilitation of focus group discussions with parents, children, teachers and others information providers.

Ms. Suzanne Kodsi, Head of Operations and Mr. Nicolas Leroy, Programme Manager from the European Union Delegation to Libya, attended the opening session during which, UNICEF Special Representative in Libya Mr. Ghassan Khalil said “This is the start of a research process that will lead to evidence based knowledge on violence against children and young people in Libya”.

In her speech to the participants Ms. Kodsi emphasized, “The EU has been and will continue supporting the Libyan people; education and protection of women and children remain a priority for the EU and its partners in Libya.”

Upon completion of the training phase of the study, data collection will begin in all urban and rural selected areas, followed by data analysis and drafting a report with findings and action-oriented recommendations to be validated by broader consultations in different parts of Libya.

The study will be the basis for the development of a behavioural change strategy to reduce school and home based violence and promote non-violent alternative disciplining measures.
