Equipping Teachers with Skills for the Future: South–South Learning Exchange on Teacher Development

Cross-regional webinar highlights innovative approaches from Jordan, Uganda, and Lebanon under the PROSPECTS Partnership, funded by the Government of the Netherlands.

Across the Middle East, North Africa, and Eastern and Southern Africa, teachers are navigating increasingly complex learning environments — from multi-grade and multilingual settings to digital learning in times of crisis. To support educators on the frontlines, UNICEF organized a cross-regional Learning Webinar on 20 August 2025 in collaboration with UNHCR under the PROSPECTS Partnership, generously funded by the Government of the Netherlands, aiming to foster exchange of knowledge and practices between key stakeholders in both regions.

The webinar convened education experts, ministry representatives, and partners from across the PROSPECTS portfolio to exchange lessons and identify scalable approaches to teacher development in displacement settings.

About the Webinar

Speakers from Jordan, Uganda, and Lebanon showcased innovative models of teacher professional development designed to ensure inclusive, equitable, and quality education for every child — including those displaced by conflict or crisis.

  • Jordan’s Teacher of the Future programme supports teachers through structured professional development rooted in national frameworks and reflective practice using the most recent evidence and scientific research.
  • Uganda’s U-Catch Up initiative, based on the Teaching at the Right Level approach, helps teachers use remedial learning techniques to reach students at different levels, while ensuring teacher professional pathways provide opportunities to influence pre-service and in-service teacher training.
  • Lebanon’s Gender-Responsive Digital Pedagogy Guide ensures that digital learning is inclusive and safe for all learners, especially girls and marginalized groups by adapting a model that is tailored the country’s specific context.

Opening the session, Tasha Gill, UNICEF Global Lead on Migration, highlighted the centrality of investing in teachers:

“When teachers are supported, children are supported.”

The webinar concluded with a call to action from Euphrates Efosi Wose, UNICEF Senior Education Advisor, who emphasized that:

“Teacher development is the backbone of learning and skilling in crisis-affected settings.”

Funded by the Government of the Netherlands, the PROSPECTS Partnership brings together UNICEF, UNHCR, ILO, IFC, and the World Bank to enhance education, protection, and livelihoods for refugees, internally displaced people, and host communities. The initiative operates in eight countries — Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Sudan, Kenya, Ethiopia, and Uganda, where over 20 million people are forcibly displaced.

The partnership focuses on strengthening national systems, supporting teachers and young people, and promoting South–South learning exchanges to share and scale proven solutions.
