Dr. Víctor Aguayo was appointed Associate Director, Programme Division, and Global Chief of UNICEF Nutrition Programme in October 2016. His career is guided by the conviction that hunger and malnutrition are a violation of children’s rights.

Dr. Aguayo has 25 years of policy, programme, research, management, and humanitarian experience in Maternal and Child Nutrition in Africa, Asia and Latin America. He has served as Chief of UNICEF’s Child Nutrition and Development Programme in India; Regional Nutrition Adviser for UNICEF in South Asia; and Regional Nutrition Adviser for UNICEF in West and Central Africa.

Prior to joining UNICEF in 2004, Dr. Aguayo was Regional Nutrition and Child Survival Adviser for Africa with Helen Keller International; Post-doctoral Research Fellow at the University of California; and Doctoral Research Fellow at the Institute for Research in Development, based in Latin America.

A national of Spain, Dr. Aguayo is a public health doctor. He graduated in Biological Sciences; holds a Master of Public Health in International Health; and a PhD in Public Health Nutrition from the University of Paris. He is proficient in English, French and Spanish, and has published over 60 articles in peer-reviewed journals.
