February 28, 2012 UNFPA Executive Director Babatunde Osotimehin speaks at the start of the ‘Raise Your Voice to End FGM’ concert,

NEW YORK, 5 June 2017 –“It was with shock and great sadness that I learned this morning of the passing of my cherished friend and colleague, Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin, Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund.

“Dr. Babatunde was a constant partner and respected leader in the global effort to provide essential health care to women and adolescents around the world. He was also a vocal advocate for improving collaboration across the UN family, with a focus on achieving results, especially for the poorest and most disadvantaged.

“Today represents a terrible loss for Dr. Babatunde’s family and many friends around the world, for UNFPA as an organization, and for Nigeria, the country he served — and loved — so well. It is also a loss for people around the world, who have lost a leading voice in global health, and a champion of equity. But he leaves behind an inspiring legacy of public service and commitment to the health of every person.

“On behalf of everyone in the UNICEF family, I offer my deepest condolences to Dr. Babatunde’s family and colleagues at UNFPA. “

UNICEF promotes the rights and wellbeing of every child, in everything we do.  Together with our partners, we work in 190 countries and territories to translate that commitment into practical action, focusing special effort on reaching the most vulnerable and excluded children, to the benefit of all children, everywhere.
