Sendai World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction: UNICEF experts available for interviews

WHAT:  UNICEF senior experts will be attending the 3rd World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction.

WHO:  Ted Chaiban, UNICEF Director of Programmes
Antony Spalton, Disaster Risk Reduction Specialist
Carmen van Heese, Regional Emergency Advisor, East Asia and Pacific
Other regional experts from Africa, Central Europe, Latin America and elsewhere.

When: 14-18 March 20115

Where: Sendai, Japan

Why: The last 10 years have seen some of the largest disasters on record, from tsunamis, floods and cyclones, to famines, earthquakes and hurricanes. Children have been disproportionately affected, as their lives have been threatened and their access to basic services disrupted.

In Sendai, UNICEF will call for increased investments in safer and more protective environments for children, both in humanitarian and development contexts, and for the involvement of children and young people in national and global dialogues.
