UNICEF appoints singer Nancy Ajram as Regional Ambassador for the Middle East and North Africa

BEIRUT/AMMAN, 22 October 2009 – UNICEF’s Regional Office for the Middle East and North Africa announced today the appointment of Lebanese star Nancy Ajram as Regional Goodwill Ambassador.

“We are delighted to welcome Nancy Ajram to UNICEF,” said Sigrid Kaag, UNICEF Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa. “Goodwill ambassadors help focus the world’s attention on the needs of children and can act as agents of change.”

Ms. Ajram has been singing from an early age and her fame and appeal now span the Middle East and North Africa region and beyond. She has also been a dedicated supporter of children’s issues in her native Lebanon.

Ms. Ajram will help raise the profile of children’s issues – particularly in relation to early childhood development, protection from harm and young people’s participation.

“I have always been passionate about UNICEF's work. It is an honour for me to be given this opportunity to contribute to this work for children,” Ms. Ajram said. "As a young mother with a small child myself, I relate even more to children and to mothers of the region."

Note to the editor:
Nancy Ajram is currently the second UNICEF Regional Ambassador for the Middle East and North Africa. Egyptian Actor Mahmoud Kabil has been holding this title since late 2003.

UNICEF is on the ground in over 150 countries and territories to help children survive and thrive, from early childhood through adolescence. The world’s largest provider of vaccines for developing countries, UNICEF supports child health and nutrition, good water and sanitation, quality basic education for all boys and girls, and the protection of children from violence, exploitation, and AIDS. UNICEF is funded entirely by the voluntary contributions of individuals, businesses, foundations and governments.
