Maria Calivis was appointed Deputy Executive Director (Programmes) ad interim in June 2016.

Prior to that, from 2011 until 2015, she served as Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa Region, based in Amman, Jordan.
Ms. Calivis served from 2009 to 2011 as Director and Chief of Staff of the Executive Director’s Office in UNICEF Headquarters in New York. From February 2004 to June 2009, she was Regional Director for Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia, based in Geneva. From 2000 to 2004, she was UNICEF’s Representative in India, one of UNICEF largest offices, and from January 1997 to February 2000, she was Director, Change Management, at UNICEF Headquarters in New York. She also served as UNICEF’s Representative in Tunisia from 1993 to 1996.

From 1983 to 1992, Ms. Calivis held a number of positions at Headquarters and in the field. She was Senior Recruitment and Staff Development Officer at Headquarters in New York from January 1990 to end 1992, and Deputy Representative in Guinea Conakry from January 1986 to December 1989. While based in the Regional Office in Amman, Jordan, in 1985, she was responsible for the development of UNICEF assisted programmes in the West Bank.

Ms. Calivis is a national of Italy. She obtained a BA Degree in Political Science from the American University in Cairo in 1977, a Master of Arts Degree in International Relations from the Johns Hopkins University, School of Advanced International Studies, in Washington DC in 1980, and was awarded a Master of Science degree in Social Policy and Planning from the London School of Economics in the United Kingdom in 1991. 

Ms. Calivis’ mother tongue is Italian and she is fluent in English and French and has a basic knowledge of Arabic.
