Addressing the Global Sanitation Crisis

His Royal Highness, Willem-Alexander, The Prince of Orange, Chairman of the UN Secretary General’s Advisory Board on Water and Sanitation (UNSGAB).
Mr. Juan Lozano, Minister of Environment and Urban Affairs, Colombia.
Dr. Uschi Eid, Deputy Chair, UNSGAB.

The first preparatory meeting on the International Year of Sanitation 2008 to address the global sanitation crisis.

Monday, 7 May 2007, 09:30 – 16:00.

UNICEF House, New York.  The meeting is open to the media and is organized by UNSGAB, the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) and UNICEF.

In December 2006, the United Nations General Assembly declared 2008 the International Year of Sanitation in response to a silent crisis that is responsible for thousands of preventable deaths daily – especially of children under the age of five.  Despite progress, the world continues to be off track to reach the Millennium Development Goal target of reducing by half the number of people without access to proper sanitation by 2015.

Note to broadcasters:  Video footage of sanitation projects worldwide is available free of charge from The Newsmarket at http://www.thenewsmarket.com or by visiting www.unicef.org
