Liberia: Visit of the Executive Boards of UNDP, UNICEF, UNFPA and WFP

MONROVIA, 23 February 2007 - The Executive Boards of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and World Food Programme (WFP) will be making an official joint visit to Liberia from 25 February to 4 March. The purpose of the visit of the 26-member delegation is to witness first hand how the UN funds and programmes operate and deliver programme results at the national and county levels.

“Building on the success of the Partners’ Forum, this is a wonderful achievement for the entire UN family in Liberia to have been selected to receive a joint visit of the Executive Boards of the four UN funds and programmes,” said Mr. Jordan Ryan, Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Recovery and Governance.

“Liberia was also selected to host this important joint visit because it is an example of how the United Nations can contribute to the transition of nations from post-conflict to reconstruction, recovery and development,” said Mr. Ryan, who also serves as United Nations Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator in Liberia.

During the joint visit, the Executive Board members will meet with Her Excellency Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, President of the Republic of Liberia and other senior Government officials. Meetings are also scheduled with officials from the Liberian private sector and civil society, as well as with the United Nations in Liberia, including Mr. Alan Doss, Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Coordinator of United Nations Operations in Liberia. Site visits to inspect programme work in Bomi, Lofa, Montserrado, and Nimba Counties are planned.

The Executive Boards are the governing bodies of the UN funds and programmes and responsible for providing inter-governmental support to and supervision of their activities, in accordance with the overall policy guidance of the General Assembly and the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations.

The executive boards will discuss their mission to Liberia at a press conference  scheduled for Friday, 2 March, 1130 hours at the Mamba Point Hotel.  The press conference is being held in conjunction with the United Nations Communications Group-Liberia (UNCG-Liberia).
