UNICEF commends Fuji TV for award

Congratulates Japanese Network For Corporate Philanthropy Award

LUCERNE, NEW YORK,  28 April 2006 – UNICEF applauded Fuji Television as the Japanese network was honoured at the Bal d’Or tonight and will officially receive the Rose d’Or Charity Award tomorrow night for corporate philanthropy in recognition of 33 years of fundraising on behalf of UNICEF.

“For more than three decades, Fuji Television has distinguished itself as an exemplary friend to UNICEF and to children throughout the world,” UNICEF Executive Director Ann M. Veneman said from New York. “We are proud and honoured to be associated with Fuji Television.”

Lord David Puttnam, president of UNICEF UK, will present the award to Mr. Koichi Murakami President and Chief Operating Officer of Fuji Television on Saturday at the Rose d’Or Film Festival in Lucerne.

“Fuji Television is the perfect example of how when serious commitment is aligned with a desire to seriously improve our world,
almost anything becomes possible," said Lord Puttnam.

Fuji Television’s first successful fundraiser was in 1974 when the comedian Danny Kaye, UNICEF’s first Goodwill Ambassador, was a special guest on “The UNICEF World Show ‘74” which aired on New Year's Eve in Japan.    Since then, Fuji’s telethons and other fundraising campaigns have raised an annual average of 100 million Japanese yen per year, totalling more than  3.2 billion yen. The donations have gone to UNICEF programmes supporting children in Asia and Africa. 

In 2005 alone, more than 130 million yen was raised to help children following the devastating tsunami of December 2004. 

Fuji Television and its 27 affiliates conduct fundraising campaigns throughout the year, informing and engaging audiences about humanitarian crises.

The network’s commitment goes beyond fundraising to creating a real awareness among viewers, said Veneman. On a trip to Japan earlier this month, she learned that 97 percent of the Japanese public is familiar with UNICEF.

Veneman noted that every year, Fuji sends a crew to shoot a documentary in one country in difficulty.  The piece is aired nationwide by affiliates to appeal on behalf of the children of the country.  This year, in keeping with UNICEF’s “Unite for Children, Unite Against AIDS” camapign, Fuji will turn its lens to Malawi, where HIV/AIDS is having a tremendous impact on the lives of children.
