Leaders call for immediate action to help women and children survive

Global Partnerships on maternal, newborn and child health unite to achieve MDGs 4&5

Who:  The New Partnership for Maternal, Newborn & Child Health and The Global Alliance for Vaccines & Immunization

Dr. Alpha Oumar Konaré, Chairperson, Commission of the African Union;

Mrs. Mary Robinson, President, Realizing Rights: The Ethical Globalization Initiative (former President of Ireland and former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights), and other global health leaders.

The event will be opened by Mrs. Nane Annan and moderated by Mr. Riz Khan, former Senior News Anchor, CNN International.

What:   Roundtable event focused on achieving MDGs 4 & 5 to reduce maternal and child mortality. The event is an official side event of the 2005 World Summit. Recent gains from existing partnerships and promising new initiatives will be discussed.

The Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health will hold a presentation on the partnership from 11:15am to 12:30pm.

Why:    Each year, more than half a million women die in pregnancy or childbirth, and more than 10 million children die before their fifth birthday. In order to meet MDGs 4 & 5, increased funding, better health and information systems, a stronger health workforce, improved coordination and, most importantly, immediate action is needed.
