UNICEF celebrates 30 years of cooperation with the Government of Viet Nam

MEDIA ADVISORY, 17 June 2005 - This year marks 30 years of cooperation between UNICEF and the Government of Viet Nam. UNICEF began its first nation-wide programme of assistance in Viet Nam in 1975 – being the first United Nations agency to have an official and physical presence in Viet Nam right after the unification of the country and has since then been working with the Vietnamese Government to improve the well-being of all children across the country.

The past 30 years has seen rapid progress for children in Viet Nam especially in child survival and development, accompanied by an impressive reduction in poverty rates. UNICEF is proud of its record working with the Government of Viet Nam over these 30 years. As Viet Nam continues its impressive socio-economic development, new challenges are emerging, such as, homelessness, drug abuse, sexual and economic exploitation, trafficking, child injuries and HIV/AIDS as well growing disparities between urban and rural, Kinh and ethnic minority. UNICEF is looking forward to continuing its cooperative partnership with the Government and is finalising details of the next five year country programme of cooperation 2006 – 2010.

A series of events will be co-hosted by UNICEF and the Viet Nam Commission for Population, Family and Children (CPFC) to celebrate this important day on 23rd June 2005.  Ms Rima Salah, UNICEF Deputy Executive Director, and who was a former UNICEF Representative in Viet Nam (1995-1998) and Ms Anupama Rao Singh, UNICEF Regional Director for East Asia and the Pacific will pay a visit to Viet Nam.  Vice Prime Minister Pham Gia Khiem and Minister Le Thi Thu from CPFC will be participating as well as hundreds of high ranking officers from international and national organizations, Vietnamese adolescents and children.
