George Weah in New York, directly from Liberia trip

Liberian international soccer star George Weah has flown directly from Liberia, where he met with child soldiers and hundreds of other children.

After 15 years of civil war, and with an estimated 21,000 child ex-combatants in Liberia, the disarming and re-integration of Liberia’s child soldiers is fundamental to peace in Liberia, and key to breaking the cycle of child-soldier wars in West Africa.

UNICEF’s intention is to assist in the disarmament and  re-integration into civilian life of child soldiers, and to provide educational and vocational support programmes in support of a peaceful Liberia.
