Father’s Day: Super Dads show us how to #EatPlayLove

Join UNICEF photo contest with #EarlyMomentsMatter-MY

Kuala Lumpur, 16 June 2017 - This Father’s Day, UNICEF is having a photo contest to celebrate the Super Dads making a difference in the early years of their children’s lives. Join celebrities around the world including Harith Iskander, as they celebrate fatherhood by sharing videos and photos of what it takes to be a ‘Super Dad’, using the hashtags #EarlyMomentsMatter-MY on social media.

“Too often childcare is seen as the purview of the mother, but fathers make invaluable contributions in bringing up bright and healthy children,” said Marianne Clark-Hattingh, UNICEF Representative in Malaysia. “When fathers are present in the lives of their little ones, at mealtimes and at playtimes, providing protection and care, they boost their child’s development – physically, intellectually and emotionally. We want to encourage all fathers, to become ‘Super Dads’. This Father’s Day, we want to celebrate Malaysia’s super dads sharing precious father-child moments.”

Advances in neuroscience have proven that when children spend their earliest years in a nurturing, stimulating environment, new neural connections form at speeds of 1,000 per second. These connections help determine their health, ability to learn and deal with stress, and even influence their earning capacity later in life. This is why it is important for dads, as much as moms to play an active role in their children’s lives.

Pictures submitted to this UNICEF photo competition before 30th of June 2017 will be featured on UNICEF Malaysia’s Facebook and Instagram. The best photos will be awarded with prizes sponsored by Kidxy, an online platform for parents to discover and book kid’s activities at child friendly places accessible to all.

As part of the Super Dads UNICEF campaign, Harith Iskander alongside his children feature in a video highlighting the trials and tribulations of fatherhood. Produced in collaboration with UNICEF in Malaysia, Harith’s short video cliptakes a light-hearted approach to showcasing the challenges dads face every day.

The dissemination of the video and the photo contest is supported by Malaysia Airports and will be featured on their screens in all airport terminals.

In Malaysia and across the globe, UNICEF urges governments and the private sector to increase spending and influence policies to support early childhood development programmes that focus on providing parents with the resources and information they need to provide nurturing care to their children especially in their formative first 5 years of life.
