UNICEF celebrates World Breastfeeding Week in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, 25 July 2008 - As the world waits to welcome the 2008 Beijing Olympics on 8 August, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) stands firmly in support of mothers in Malaysia who are striving to achieve the gold standard of infant feeding:

  • to breastfeed their babies exclusively for the first six months; and,
  • to continue breastfeeding together with feeding other appropriate complementary foods up to two years and beyond.

UNICEF Malaysia’s World Breastfeeding Week activities are:

1)  Radio Campaign: Breastfeeding is Best!
Public service announcements in support of breastfeeding will be aired on Media Prima Group’s English and Malay language radio stations from 28 July – 1 August. The Radio PSAs in English and Malay are created and sponsored by and for UNICEF in support of mothers and breastfeeding in Malaysia.

2)  Forum on Working Women and Breastfeeding
A forum titled 'Working Women and Breastfeeding' will be held to discuss challenges faced by working women and to present the Memorandum on Maternity Protection Supporting Working Women.

The event is organised by the Breastfeeding Information Bureau (BIB) Malaysia with support from the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development, the National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN) and UNICEF. It will be held on Friday, 1 August 2008.

The Forum will be chaired by Prof. Emeritus Datuk  Dr. Nik Safiah Karim with the following topics and speakers

Working Women and Breastfeeding:
Maternity Protection, The Global Situation

Ms. Ma. Ines Fernandez, International Baby Food Action Network (IBFAN)

Breastfeeding and Reproductive Health
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Seri Suniza Suffian

Challenges of  Women and Work
Dr. N. Manonmoney

Supporting Working Women
Mrs. Wong Poai Hong
